International Women’s Day 2019 – Read Before Marching

So you want to get ready for International Women’s Day?

Let’s start with a delicious visualisation…

Close your eyes and picture this… It’s the future, things have changed. You’re richer. Everyone you know is richer. You’re more satisfied with your life in general. So are all your friends. You’re happier in your romantic relationships and you’re living in a peaceful world with a perfectly harmonious climate. And guess what, so is everyone else!

What happened? How did we finally manage it? Was it a wizard witch? Fairies? Aliens?

T’was balance my friend. We did it with Balance.

Gender balance specifically in this case.

International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It’s a call to action for accelerating gender balance.

And friends, there’s a lot to know…

International Women’s Day 2019 – Theme

Let’s dive right in to this year’s campaign theme: #balanceforbetter

Better – a better world, a better life, a better economy and a better community to live in.

Better? Really, just through improving gender equality? That’s right. There are so many ways we could be living on an infinitely better planet. With infinitely better lives. We’re going to take a look at some hard evidence on how gender balance really does make things better:

International Women’s Day – Why is Balance Better?

When more women are involved in international peace treaties, the treaties last longer and are generally better quality. (UN Women)

Closing the gender pay gap could increase the economy by an average of 35% (Voxeu)

Gender equality could increase welfare gains by 20% in some regions of the world (Voxeu)

Companies with the highest levels of diversity (either gender, ethnic, or racial) are between 15% –  35% more likely to have financial returns above industry average. (McKinsey)

Homes that have better gender equality in housework are shown to have happier relationships. The gender gap in the home means women spend more time on unpaid labour, and you know that can lead to friction and a higher chance of divorce. (ABC)

Equality of the genders makes children’s lives better. Teens are generally more satisfied with life in countries with high levels of gender equality. Even taking individual and national economic factors into account. (NCBI)

Gender equality is the number one predictor of peace. Even more than a state’s wealth, level of democracy, or religious identity. (PeaceWomen)

Climate change is a manmade problem with a feminist solution. (According to Mary Robinson, chairperson of Nelson Mandela’s organisation The Elders). Gender equality in climate policy making could literally save our planet. (Mothers of Invention)

I mean come on! Who doesn’t want to be richer, happier, safer and just generally living a far more fabulous life? Doesn’t that sound like a world you’d like to live in?

International Women’s Day -It’s a Call to Action!

That’s why the focus for International Women’s Day 2019 is highlighting balance. Or more specifically how balance can make a better world for all of us. It’s a reminder that gender inequality isn’t a women’s issue. No friends, it’s a human issue.

#balanceforbetter is a call to action for all humans to get involved in making our world a better place for everyone.

And that leads us to… YOU!

So this is my version of the #balalncefrobetter pose. The muscles in my poor typing hands literally wouldn’t let me bend my wrists back enough to do it properly, but you get the idea, right?

According to the International Women’s Day website, this day is nothing new. We’ve been celebrating it for over a hundred years. And there were over one million supporters of the very first (official) IWD event! All the way back in 1911. (yes, one full million, even then!)

As internationally acclaimed feminist and legend Gloria Steinem says, “Today, International Women’s Day IWD is not country, group or organisation specific. It belongs to all groups collectively everywhere.”

So tell me, how are you going to get involved in International Women’s day this year?
